Enterprise 2.0 – the application of Web 2.0 technologies in a corporate context – is still in its infancy in Switzerland. The step from leisure activity to productive tool is off to a sticky start.
Successful knowledge workers distinguish themselves by sharing knowledge and generating it from the most varied ideas and opinions. For this, they need the opportunity to meet and exchange information. 2.0 technologies such as Wikis or social networks support them with Web-based communication as well as Web-based network and knowledge management. They create opportunities to interact, thus opening up access to a collective intelligence.
Together with sieber&partners and the State Secretariat for Economic Affairs SECO’s SME portal, Unic has conducted a study on Enterprise 2.0. In August 2009, 225 decision-makers participated in the survey.
Discovering, testing and gauging
The participants attest that their companies still hardly reach for the potentials offered by the use of collective intelligence. Discovering, testing and gauging the limits dominate. The fact that many companies try to reach as many different goals as possible instead of using 2.0 technologies in a targeted manner reflects this “test” reality.
That they remain in the test environment is due to uncertainty regarding the precise business benefits and costs of Enterprise 2.0. However, the real crux of the matter is that the advantages of collective intelligence only come to the fore after Enterprise 2.0 has sufficiently penetrated the companies in technical and cultural terms. However, as a result of deep penetration it already becomes apparent that internal communication routes are shortened and the quality of collaboration across locations improves.
The 2.0 movement will find its way from private to corporate use. With this study, Unic wants to support decision-makers to promote this development, to steer it, and to make it useable for their own company.
Enterprise 2.0 – collective intelligence as a competitive advantage
The study report provides a conceptual explanation of what Enterprise 2.0 is and how Enterprise 2.0 can be used to promote interaction and knowledge exchange. Moreover, it empirically shows the current implementation status and experience in Swiss companies.
The study report provides decision-makers with a thematic introduction and a benchmark based on the study participants’ self-assessment. The steps for a successful implementation are formulated from the theoretical and empirical insights.
